Situation

Clifton Hall is located in the centre of the village of Clifton which is within a short drive of the town of Ashbourne which has excellent local amenities including shops, public houses, churches, sports facilities and is noted for its annual Royal Shrovetide football game. The larger conurbation of Derby is also within easy reach with its excellent transport facilities including trains to London from 1 hour 25 minutes. Ashbourne is in the Derbyshire Dales, a short distance from the beautiful Dove Dale and on the edge of the Peak District National Park, thus being well placed for a wide selection of outdoor pursuits.

Historical Note

The Hall stands on land which in 1460 was owned by the Cockayne family of Ashbourne. They continued to hold the manor of Clifton under the Fitzherberts of Norbury until 1594. The manor then passed to the family of Hayne who may have been responsible for its construction in the mid-18th Century, it was then altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. In Victorian times the house was purchased by William Smith, a local cheese factor, it remained with the Smith family until the death of Rev F C Smith in 1933. In 1948 the hall was divided into two homes and was sold in 1950 to a CDR Harris who put it back into one in the late 1960s. In 1975 it was sold to Mr Davies who ran it as a small hotel, he then divided the remaining land for building and sold the hall in 1998, our client purchased in 2000.
